AGRICULTURAL BASICS & LAND PREPARATION
Meaning and Scope of Agriculture
Agriculture is the science, art, and practice of cultivating the soil, growing crops, and raising
animals for food, fibre, and income. It forms the foundation of human survival and economic
development.
Agriculture is divided into crop production, livestock production, forestry, and fisheries. In
Nigeria, agriculture employs a large percentage of the population and contributes significantly to
food security and rural livelihoods.
Modern agriculture goes beyond subsistence farming. It includes improved production methods,
mechanization, processing, record-keeping, marketing, and agribusiness entrepreneurship.
Importance of Agriculture to Nigeria
Agriculture plays a vital role in Nigeria’s economy. It provides food for the population, raw
materials for industries, employment for millions of people, and income for rural households.
Agriculture also contributes to poverty reduction, foreign exchange earnings, and national
development. For youth, agriculture offers opportunities for self-employment and
entrepreneurship.
Introduction to Agroecology
Agroecology refers to farming systems that work with natural processes rather than
against them. It recognizes the interaction between soil, plants, water, climate, and
humans.
Agro-ecological practices help conserve soil, reduce production costs, and improve
sustainability. Examples include mulching, crop rotation, and organic manure
application.
Climate and Farming
Climate refers to the average weather conditions of a place over a long period of time. These
conditions include rainfall, temperature, sunlight, wind, and humidity. Climate plays a very
important role in agriculture because crops depend on suitable weather conditions to grow well
and produce good yields.
In Nigeria, farming activities are largely determined by the rainy season and the dry season.
Most crops, including cassava, are rain-fed, meaning they depend on rainfall rather than
irrigation. Therefore, farmers must understand climate patterns to plan their farming operations
properly.
Sustainable Agricultural Practices
Sustainable agriculture refers to farming practices that meet present food and
income needs without damaging the environment or reducing the ability of future
generations to farm. It focuses on maintaining soil health, conserving water, protecting
the environment, and ensuring long-term productivity.
Unlike unsustainable farming practices that exhaust the soil and damage the land,
sustainable agriculture seeks to balance production with environmental protection.
